The Titans have promoted Tight Ends coach Arthur Smith to Offensive Coordinator. This move comes after former offensive coordinator, Matt LaFluer, took the head coach job in Green Bay after just one season as offensive coordinator with the Titans.
This move for the Titans comes as no surprise as it was believed by many that the Titans would promote someone already on the coaching staff rather than go out and hire a new coach with a new scheme and new ideals.
Arthur Smith has has been a part of the Titans organization for a significant amount of time. Arthur Smith was hired as the Defensive Quality Control Assistant, in 2011 when the head coach of the Titans was Mike Munchak. Through the 2018/19 season, Arthur Smith has done a great job with the Tight Ends whether it is visible or not. In week one the titans lost arguably there best overall player, Delani Walker. Coming into the season Walker was the Titans TE 1 and was a critical part of the offense.
This injury opened the door for Johnu Smith who greatly improved as the season progressed. This was Johnu's second year in the league. Johnu had an amazing first half of the season but suffered an MCL injury in week 14 against the Jaguars. This left the titans with a scarcity at TE. The Titans had Luke Stocker, Anthony Firkser, and MyCole Pruitt, all of which were not considered critical to the offense coming into the season.
As the TE's coach, Arthur Smith fought adversity and made sure there was minimal drop off in the production at TE. Smith did a great job working with all three tight ends
two of which had minimal experience with the Titans.\ For the offense and for Marcus Mariota, the hiring of Arthur Smith as OC is a great hire. The Titans avoided Marcus Mariota having to learn a whole new scheme, because in the past, that has not worked out well for Mariota or the offense. Arthur Smith is a good hire despite the fact he has never called plays before. This should be very interesting to see how everything unfolds next season.
